PASSION: DECEIT
There has been some debate through the years about which passion best describes the Three, with heavy hitters like Naranjo and Ichazo, originators of the Enneagram system, disagreeing about it. The myth that Threes are vain as fuck follows them through life, especially when people pick up on the whole “I’m projecting an image” thing. (I’ll be honest, darlins. You’re fooling us less than you think.)
Truth is, Threes take more pride in what they do than in who they are, and they’re never really done. There’s no resting on their laurels for them, literally no time to sit around and be vain!
The passion I think best describes the Three is deceit, because Threes are fake-it-till-you-make-it folks. They’re usually not coming from a malicious place. Most Threes just kind of dive in and expect themselves to rise to the occasion. It’s more like they show us what they WANT to be true about themselves. Unfortunately, sometimes what we want to believe about ourselves isn’t the actual truth, is it?
Our survival stories, while commendable for getting us this far, always obscure our deepest, truest, and most expansive selves, and there’s nobody this is more true for than our beloved Threes. The opposite of deceit is truthfulness, and truth is the greatest weapon in the Three’s arsenal, and usually the least utilized. Habits are a bitch to break, and before Threes can start speaking the truth, they have to realize they aren’t.
